Job summary
AWS Products team is looking for a customer-obsessed Business Intelligence Engineer to join the team. AWS has a culture of data-driven decision making, and requires business intelligence that is timely, accurate and actionable. This role will partner closely with the business teams to understand the data-needs of the team and ensure that the business teams are able to answer hard questions with real data. This individual will participate in business reviews and new-initiatives. They should be able to identify and help close gaps in the information available, as well as predict up-and-coming data-needs when participating in discussions about new products or features.

You should be highly collaborative and organized. You should be capable of prioritizing multiple deliverables and effectively communicate progress and blockers. You should feel comfortable working across multiple data-sources, and be capable of participating in and understanding how multiple systems communicate information to one-another.

Key job responsibilities
* Owning the design, development, and maintenance of scalable solutions for ongoing metrics, reports, analyses, dashboards, etc. to support analytical and business needs.
* Translate basic business problem statements into analysis requirements.
* Use analytical and statistical rigor to answer business questions and drive business decisions.
* Find and create ways to measure the customer experience to drive business outcomes.
* Develop queries and visualizations for ad-hoc requests and projects, as well as ongoing reporting.
* Write queries and output efficiently, and have in-depth knowledge of the data available in area of expertise. Pull the data needed with standard query syntax; periodically identify more advanced methods of query optimization. Convert data to make it analysis-ready.
* Recognize and adopt best practices in reporting and analysis: data integrity, design, analysis, validation, and documentation.
* Troubleshoot operational data-quality issues.
* Review and audit existing ETL jobs and queries.
* Recommending improvements to back-end data sources for increased accuracy and simplicity.

A day in the life
As a BI engineer, you will be a technical leader in our team and own the technical architecture of our BI and Data platforms. This role will be responsible for generating new insights to help guide the strategic direction of our products and businesses. You will get the exciting opportunity to work on very large data sets in one of the world's largest and most complex data warehouse environments. You will work closely with the business and technical teams in analysis on many non-standard and unique business problems and use creative-problem solving to deliver actionable output. Our team is serious about great design and redefining best practices with a cloud-based approach to scalability and automation. A successful candidate will be a self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity, with strong attention to detail, an ability to work in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment, and an ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

About the hiring group

We are part of AWS Product BI team. This team supports the business intelligence needs for Compute, Storage, Networking, Automation & Messaging, Management Tools and Developer Tools product families. We own the data, metrics and reporting for these orgs. We empower all our stakeholders to make data driven business decisions by providing Daily Reports, WBRs, Analyses/Narratives and Datasets. We innovate on behalf of our end-users to produce relevant Metrics, Automations and Tools to make Data and Insights actionable.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

* Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, and solid years of relevant experience.
* 5+ years of experience with and detailed knowledge of data warehouse technical architectures, infrastructure components, ETL/ ELT and reporting/analytic tools and environments, data structures.
* 5+ years of experience with relational and star schema data modeling concepts with a solid knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL.
* 2+ years of large IT project delivery for BI oriented projects.
* 2+ years of working with very large data warehousing environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Experience in designing and delivering cross functional custom reporting solutions.
* Experience with Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) databases - Redshift (preferred), Teradata
* Experience with an enterprise class BI tool like MicroStrategy(preferred), Business Objects
* Experience with reporting tools - Tableau (preferred), OBIEE
* Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Proven ability to meet tight deadlines, multi-task, and prioritize workload
* A work ethic based on a strong desire to exceed expectations.
* Excellent analytical skills
