Job Summary

Assistant Deputy Minister
Mines Health, Safety and Enforcement Division
Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation
Various Locations in BC

The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation is responsible for British Columbia's electricity, energy and related infrastructure, and the province's mining and mineral exploration sectors. These sectors are made up of diverse interests that explore for, develop and produce energy and mineral resources, and that develop electricity generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure.

To support Government's climate objectives, the ministry focuses on advancing energy efficiency and clean or renewable energy sources and technologies, making sure that the energy we use, develop and export is the cleanest possible. The ministry has a key role in permitting and regulation of BC's mineral exploration and mining sector, which has a key role in providing the mined materials required for the low carbon transition. In fulfilling its mandate, the ministry consults, collaborates and partners with Indigenous Peoples and First Nations, other ministries and levels of government, communities, private sector stakeholders, environmental and industry organizations, and the public.

The Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM), Mines Health, Safety and Enforcement Division (MHSE), leads a division of specialized technical staff focused on: mining oversight including worker health and safety, mining regulatory framework audits, compliance management and enforcement including Health, Safety and Reclamation Code review, mines digital systems transformation, and addressing the legacy of abandoned and bankrupt mines. The MHSE Division collaborates with the Mines Competitiveness and Authorizations Division as part of the ministry's mining team.

The ideal candidate will be a creative, innovative and experienced senior leader known for their ability to build trusted, lasting relationships. Discrete and influential, the successful candidate will be as confident in their ability to lead high-performing technical teams as they are in their ability to deliver on operational goals. Experienced in compliance, enforcement, strategic policy or health and safety initiatives, the ideal person will be comfortable representing government and consulting with partners, interest groups, and local governments including First Nations. This individual displays a high level of diplomacy and integrity in all their interactions.

A complete role description and listing of qualifications is attached. The appointee will be required to consent to a criminal record check.

The BC Public Service is committed to creating a diverse workplace to reflect the population we serve and to better meet the needs of our citizens. Consider joining our executive team and being part of an innovative, inclusive, and rewarding organization.
